Visual gauge showing positive, neutral and risk signals in AI brand perception

Appearing in an AI answer does not guarantee favourable treatment. An assistant may describe your brand as expensive, limited, little-known or suited to a different audience. Presence alone misses half the issue: how AI describes you.

What AI brand perception means

It is the set of attributes, benefits, objections and risks an assistant associates with your brand. It should not be reduced to positive, neutral or negative; useful measurement preserves the reason.

“Good tool” tells you little. “Suitable for small teams but limited for international operations” reveals audience, strength and friction.

Five dimensions worth recording

  • Category: what AI believes you sell.
  • Audience: who it says the product is for.
  • Strengths: benefits or differentiators it repeats.
  • Objections: price, complexity, coverage or limitations it mentions.
  • Confidence: whether the answer is certain, qualified or potentially outdated.

How to create a repeatable test

Use queries across several contexts: “what is [brand]”, “who is it for”, “pros and cons”, “alternatives”, “is it trustworthy?” and category questions that do not include your name.

Store the literal answer, date and assistant. Label every claim as correct, incomplete, outdated or false. Repeat the same set to distinguish a pattern from random variation.

What to do about an incorrect perception

Find the origin first. Review cited sources, pages ranking for your brand and consistency across your homepage, profiles, directories and reviews. The answer is not publishing a line that says AI is wrong, but reinforcing consistent public evidence.

  • If the category is wrong, standardise the brand definition.
  • If a real capability is missing, create a specific page with verifiable detail.
  • If pricing is outdated, update owned pages and external listings.
  • If an objection is fair, answer transparently and explain who the product does fit.

Risk signals that need attention

Prioritise false claims about security, legality, availability, price or support, plus confusion with similarly named companies. Document the fix and measure again; model changes are not immediate.

How to report without overclaiming

Use literal examples and frequency. “The price objection appeared in 4 of 12 answers” is more rigorous than “AI thinks the brand is expensive”. Separate observed facts from interpretation and never promise control over external models.
