Two signal towers compared to identify competitive gaps in AI answers

Your Google competitors are not always your ChatGPT or Gemini competitors. Generated answers may feature directories, emerging products or companies that barely compete for your traditional keywords. Analysis must therefore begin with real answers, not an assumed list.

What is an AI visibility competitor?

It is any brand occupying the recommendation space you want. It may compete by product, audience or use case, or simply because the sources used by AI frame it as an alternative.

The useful question is not only “who sells the same thing?” but “who appears when a customer describes the problem we solve?”

Step 1: start with the domain and real category

Review how your website defines the product, audience, use cases, location and differentiators. That information supports discovery, comparison and decision queries without a long questionnaire.

A domain-first analysis also prevents tracking irrelevant questions that produce attractive mentions but no commercial opportunity.

Step 2: record the full answer

For each question, capture the brands, their order, the reason associated with each one, cited sources or URLs, assistant and query date.

Counting names is not enough. If a competitor leads because of an integration, price or specialisation, that reason contains the action you need to evaluate.

Step 3: build a gap matrix

Classify differences into four groups:

  • Coverage gap: the competitor appears where you do not.
  • Position gap: both appear, but the other brand is recommended first.
  • Source gap: AI cites owned or external pages that support the rival.
  • Perception gap: the assistant attributes qualities to the competitor that it does not associate with you.

This matrix turns a generic comparison into a verifiable action plan.

Step 4: prioritise by intent and impact

Not every gap deserves equal effort. Prioritise questions close to a decision: alternatives, comparison, price, trust and fit for a use case. Then assess whether you can answer with real evidence.

An opportunity is strong when the question has commercial value, the competitor leads for a fixable reason and your product can support a better answer without exaggeration.

Actions that commonly close the gap

  • Rewrite the homepage to define category and audience precisely.
  • Create a page for an underserved use case.
  • Publish a fair comparison with verifiable criteria.
  • Add visible pricing, limitations, methodology and dates.
  • Earn inclusion in the external source the assistant relies on.

Mistakes that invalidate the comparison

Avoid asking once, changing queries every round or using only branded questions. Do not confuse a mention with a positive recommendation either: context matters.

AskBrandly identifies competitors from public domain information and observed answers, showing which brands appear ahead and which sources support that outcome. Continue with Share of Model, AI brand perception and domain-first AI visibility audits.
