Classic SEO optimized for ten blue links. AEO optimizes for something different: a single AI-written answer with room for only two or three brands. If you are not one of them, you do not exist for that user.
What AEO actually means
Answer Engine Optimization is the set of actions that increase the odds an AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot or Google's AI mode) mentions your brand when someone asks about solutions in your category.
It is not about ranking a URL. It is about positioning a name and a context inside the model's knowledge and inside the sources it retrieves in real time.
How an assistant picks which brands to name
Three layers combine in every answer:
- Trained knowledge: what the model learned from the web corpus. Historical co-occurrence of your brand with your category terms matters here.
- Live retrieval: when the assistant browses, it favours pages with direct answers, structured data, comparisons and fresh listings.
- Cross-source consensus: if five publications and three directories name you, the AI reads that as a strong signal. A single mention rarely suffices.
Five levers that actually move the needle
- Presence in third-party listings and comparisons. "Best X for Y" pages are the models' favourite raw material.
- Answer-shaped content. Question as heading, answer in the first two sentences, detail afterwards.
- A clear, consistent entity. Same name, description and category on your site, company profile, LinkedIn and industry directories.
- Verifiable data. Pricing, timelines, coverage and concrete cases: AI prefers to cite what it can check.
- Freshness. Updated content with a visible date wins in live retrieval.
How AEO is measured
Here is the real problem: there is no Search Console for AI. The only serious way to measure it is to systematically run the questions your customers ask and record what the assistant answers: whether it mentions you, in which position, which competitors show up and which sources it cites.
Repeated weekly, that stops being anecdotal and becomes a time series: you see whether you rise, fall and what changed in between.
Where to start this week
- Write the 15 real questions a customer would ask before buying from you.
- Run them against two or three assistants and record the literal answer.
- Flag the answers where you are missing and which brand takes your place.
- Find the source the AI cites in those answers and work on your presence there.
That loop, repeated, is exactly what AskBrandly automates.
